memory of Casper…
a ghost of a horse!
Casper passed on to beautiful pastures and clear brooks beside the Rainbow Bridge. He will surely be waiting to accompany the herd of rescues.
Captain is the official rescue poster model. He could only be described as skeletal when he arrived at the Ranch. Even thougth he had been virtually starved by humans he had the kindest, sweetest personality one could imagine. His age was hard to guess. He had the build and fuzzy hair a baby but a head and tail of at least a yearling. We weren't sure if his testicles had not dropped due to age or malnutrition or he had already been gelded. After several months he started filling out, losing the nasty fuzzy hair, finally had testicles. Captain's guessed age at the time of seizure was a late yearling.
Most of these were referrals from friends and friends of friends. Some were auction purchases to save from the "killer pen". Some were Thoroughbreds or standardbreds that were retired or flunked racing for various reasons. 2008 was the first year we worked with the local Animal Control officers.
When the horses were transferred, and a plea for help went out to local horsemen, we found ourselves in a debate on the pros and cons of rescuing these animals. We fielded many questions at that time, such as, "Are they worth saving?" or "What will their value be after the process?"
He trusts his people to the extent that he will go ANYWHERE his people go. Proof of this can be seen in the picture of Captain inside the WTRE studio, literally "On the Air." .
